Do you grind your teeth? If so, it could be causing you pain and discomfort. Teeth grinding, medically known as bruxism, can damage your teeth and cause other oral health complications, such as hearing loss or Tembromandibular Disorders (TMD).
Causes of Teeth Grinding
Bruxism can be caused by several different factors, including stress, anxiety, or, more commonly, an abnormal bite pattern, missing teeth, or crooked teeth.
Since most people grind their teeth at night, they are completely unaware they even have a problem. However, if you constantly experience a dull headache or sore jaw in the morning, you could suffer from bruxism. If this is the case, schedule an appointment with your dentist.
There are several ways to treat bruxism, including:
- Cut back on caffeine intake
- Avoid alcohol
- Do not chew on pencils, pens, or other objects
- Avoid chewing gum
- Relax your jaw muscles by placing a warm washcloth against your cheek before bed
And, if none of the above works for you, you could opt to use a night guard.
