Fillings & Other Dental Work in Annapolis, Maryland :: Dental Care Tips

When cavities develop, treatment options vary depending on the level of tooth decay. Mild cavities may be treatable using fluoride treatments, while severe cavities could require a dental crown, root canal, or even an extraction. Luckily, most cavities are treatable using fillings.

The dentist will apply a local anesthetic to number the affected tooth. He/she will then remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser. The dentist will then clean the previously affected area and “fill” it with a tooth colored filling (this is done in layers). A special light is used to cure each layer after it is applied. When the process is completed, the dentist will shape the filling, trimming any excess material before polishing the tooth.

Fillings can also be used to treat cracked or broken teeth.

Benefits of Tooth-Colored or White Fillings

  1. Aesthetics: The tooth-colored filling blends almost seamlessly with your existing tooth, unlike traditional fillings.
  2. Bonding: Composite fillings actually chemically bond to tooth structure, providing further support.
  3. Durability: The new composite and porcelain restorations are close to rivaling nature in strength. There are now sixteen-year studies showing that with properly administered techniques, these advanced restorations actually surpass traditional dentistry.
  4. Less Invasive: With white fillings, often less of the tooth is removed.
