Bleeding deserves attention

Red, tender, swollen, or bleeding gums can be signs of gum disease. Receding gums, loose teeth, or changes in your bite are other reasons to arrange an examination. Symptoms alone cannot tell you how much support a tooth has lost.

Gingivitis and periodontitis differ

Gingivitis affects the gums and can often improve with professional cleaning and effective home care. Periodontitis involves damage to the tissues supporting teeth, including bone loss. It cannot simply be reversed by brushing, but professional treatment can help manage it.

What an assessment involves

Your dentist evaluates the gums and supporting tissues and may recommend imaging. Treatment depends on the findings and can include scaling and root planing, ongoing periodontal care, or referral. A routine cleaning and periodontal therapy serve different needs.

Keep your team informed

Tell us about smoking, diabetes, medicines, and any recent changes in your health. Ask what your gum measurements mean and what to do between appointments. Annapolis Dental Care provides periodontal therapy and maintenance tailored to your diagnosis.
