What does a night guard do?
Grinding and clenching are called bruxism. They can happen during sleep or while you are awake. Some people notice worn teeth, sensitivity, or tired jaw muscles; others first learn about the problem during a dental examination.
A dentist may recommend a guard to separate and protect the teeth. It should not be described as a guaranteed cure for grinding or every type of jaw pain. Your symptoms and examination help determine whether a guard, another approach, or further evaluation is appropriate. [1]
What does a retainer do?
After braces or clear-aligner treatment, teeth can shift. A retainer supports the position achieved during treatment. Retainers may be removable or bonded behind the teeth, and your prescribed wear schedule matters.
A clear retainer’s appearance does not tell you whether it also provides suitable protection against grinding. Keep following your treating clinician’s instructions, and discuss any damage or change in fit rather than substituting a different appliance yourself. [2]
What if you grind after clear-aligner treatment?
Tell your dentist that you have completed orthodontic treatment and bring your current retainers to the appointment. Ask how any proposed guard will work with your retention plan.
In selected cases, a clinician may recommend a custom appliance that serves both purposes. That is an individual design decision, not a reason to assume any guard can replace any retainer. Do not layer two separate appliances unless your clinician specifically directs you to do so; the American Association of Orthodontists cautions that layering can affect the bite. [3]
Questions to bring to your appointment
- Am I showing signs of grinding, clenching, or tooth wear?
- What is each of my appliances intended to do?
- How will we maintain my tooth position while protecting my teeth?
- When should I wear the appliance, and how should I clean it?
- Which changes in comfort or fit should prompt a call?
If a retainer is damaged, becomes painful, or no longer fits as it did before, contact your treating clinician. Do not try to reshape it at home. [2]
Quick answers
Can a retainer replace a night guard? Not automatically. The primary purpose of a retainer is to maintain tooth position. Ask whether your appliance also provides appropriate protection against grinding.
Can I wear a night guard and retainer together? Do not layer them without specific instructions from your clinician. Ask for a coordinated appliance and retention plan.
Does a night guard stop grinding? It can protect teeth, but it is not a guaranteed cure. Your dentist can assess the symptoms and discuss an individualized plan.
