What does a guard do?
A night guard fits over teeth and may be recommended to protect them from clenching or grinding. It is not the same as a sports mouthguard, an orthodontic retainer, or an appliance prescribed for sleep apnea.
Jaw pain has different causes
Jaw discomfort does not automatically mean you need a guard. Your dentist can evaluate the teeth, jaw joints, and muscles. Evidence that guards improve temporomandibular disorder pain is limited; they should not be presented as a guaranteed cure.
Fit and follow-up matter
A guard should not be designed to permanently change your bite. If it causes pain, stop using it and contact your dentist. Bring your appliance to visits so we can assess its condition and fit.
Make care specific to you
Ask when to wear your guard, how to clean it, and when it needs replacement. Mention jaw locking, new bite changes, and persistent symptoms. Annapolis Dental Care offers custom night guards and digital impressions when appropriate for the treatment.
