What is CBCT?
Cone-beam computed tomography uses X-rays to create three-dimensional images of dental structures. It provides a different view from a standard two-dimensional dental X-ray. Annapolis Dental Care has an onsite CBCT unit.
Use imaging for a clinical reason
CBCT is not automatically needed at every checkup. It should be used when the clinical question requires information that other suitable imaging cannot provide. Your dentist will explain how a proposed scan contributes to diagnosis or planning.
Discuss benefits and radiation
CBCT involves radiation. The goal is to obtain the information needed while minimizing exposure. Tell us about prior scans, your medical history, and pregnancy or possible pregnancy before imaging so we can plan appropriately.
Questions to ask
Ask what the scan is expected to show, whether a lower-exposure alternative would be adequate, and whether existing images can be used. Ask about the fee and how findings will be explained. A 3D image supports an examination and treatment plan; it does not replace either.
