Dental crowns: why they may be recommended

What is a crown?

A crown covers a tooth to restore its shape and help strengthen it. It may be considered for a weakened or broken tooth, a large filling with little supporting tooth remaining, or as the visible replacement tooth on an implant.

Ask about alternatives

A recommendation should start with an explanation of what is wrong and what can be preserved. Ask why a crown is being proposed, whether a filling or another restoration is suitable, and what the risks are if you postpone treatment.

Understand your appointment plan

Annapolis Dental Care uses digital dentistry for treatments that need impressions. Ask how your crown will be made, whether temporary protection is needed, and how many visits your particular treatment requires. Do not assume every crown has the same timeline.

Plan for ongoing care

Ask how to clean around the restoration and what symptoms should prompt a call. Tell us if the tooth feels uncomfortable or the bite feels different after treatment. Request an estimate that explains the proposed steps, materials, and any additional treatment before starting.
