Biofilm and Your Oral Health

Biofilm and Your Oral Health

Learn about biofilm and how to guard your oral health.

Protecting your oral health is always important. If you haven’t been doing a good job with brushing, flossing, or using mouthwash, then it’s time to change your habits. After all, the start of the new year is less than a week away!

Phases of Biofilm Development

Planktonic: Here, the bacteria start to stick to your teeth and gums. It can either be by random chance or because of chemical changes inside your mouth

Biofilm: The bacteria start to multiply. Colonies soon appear and become increasingly difficult to remove.

Dispersion: Now that the infection has propagated, it can spread out to other parts of your mouth, and eventually, other parts of the body. This, in turn, will begin to affect your overall well-being.

The Bacteria in Your Mouth

There is a mix of good and bad bacteria in your mouth. Believe it or not, there are more than 700 different types of bacteria living in your mouth! Biofilm, in particular, fuels the growth fusobacterium, streptococcus, and prevotella, among others.

Oral Health Concerns

Dental health and oral hygiene are no jokes. However, if these concerns turn into troubling conditions, then it’s time to visit your dentist. Everyone here at Annapolis Dental Care is committed to resolving your dental anxiety. There’s no need to feel self-conscious about your oral health concerns. Some examples of problems to look out for include tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

Preventing Future Buildup

Biofilm is a tough opponent, but it can be overcome! Brush your teeth at least twice every day. Scrub for about two minutes; sometimes, less is more. Use floss to reach the spots that your toothbrush can’t reach. The spaces and gaps between your teeth are particularly troublesome to deal with, and if you find that even floss isn’t helping, then it’s time to rinse with mouthwash!
