How to Deal With Painful Braces annapolis dental care

Everyone who has had braces has experienced some level of pain or irritation.

A healthy and beautiful smile can be achieved through braces. Although the outcome is beneficial, the braces process also comes with some discomfort. Everyone who has had braces has experienced some level of pain or irritation. A good thing to remember is that this pain is temporary, and soon you will have a perfect smile. Luckily, there are some ways to reduce the discomfort. Here are some tips to help deal with painful braces.

Over the Counter Relief

If you have an orthodontist appointment coming up, it may help to take some over-the-counter pain medicine before the appointment. This can help the initial discomfort that comes with getting your braces tightened.

Cold Food and Drinks

Another way to help limit inflammation after having your braces tightened is to have some cold food or beverages handy. If your teeth or gums feel sore after your braces are tightened, try sucking on an ice cube, holding an ice pack to the area, or eating your favorite ice cream or milkshake. Cold temperatures help minimize swelling and inflammation while helping relieve the pain.

Orthodontic Wax

Your orthodontist should give you some wax to put on your braces to help the discomfort. Occasionally, a bracket or wire may irritate the inside of your cheeks. Just hold a bit of wax briefly between your fingers to make it bendable, then stick it on the wire or bracket where you are experiencing friction.

Stick to Soft Foods

Having your braces tightened can result in sensitive gums and teeth. It is a good idea to avoid hard, crunchy, and chewy foods like hard candies, chips, and popcorn. Instead, eat softer foods and drinks such as ice cream, smoothies, soup, and mashed potatoes. Once the pain goes away, you can resume eating your normal foods.

Rinse Your Mouth

Sores may occasionally develop on your cheeks and gums as they adapt to the braces materials in your mouth. A salt water rinse is a simple solution and can reduce irritation. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth multiple times. The saltwater will reduce inflammation and promotes healing. Do this a couple of times a day after your orthodontist appointment until the pain subsides.
