Getting Cavities On Your Wisdom Teeth

Getting Cavities On Your Wisdom Teeth

Yes, it is possible to get cavities in your wisdom teeth.

Yes, it is possible to get cavities in your wisdom teeth. Cavities can form in any teeth if you aren’t taking care of your teeth, either. They can also become a problem on any part of your teeth. Let’s find out more about them!

Cavities

The wisdom teeth are also known as third molars. They tend to erupt later than other teeth and are only problems if they cause you pain. It’s sometimes better to get them removed before they erupt improperly, especially if their position relative to the size of your mouth makes them harder to brush and floss, and thus, more susceptible to tooth decay. Impacted wisdom teeth are more likely to develop cavities for this reason. That’s because the tooth is stuck in or near the gums, creating a pocket that traps food particles. As the American Dental Association (ADA) asserts, this zone becomes a prime breeding ground for bacteria to feast on what is left behind.

What to Do

There’s a reason why you are advised to brush your teeth after you eat, no matter how much you eat. Fillings and root canals are the usual treatment options for other teeth, but the wisdoms are special. Most of the time, extractions are recommended, which is why getting wisdom teeth pulled is so common, and so scary. Your dentist may recommend that you get your wisdom teeth out, but might not always be able to provide this service for you since it is technically a form of dental and oral surgery.

Keeping Your Wisdom Teeth

You can, of course, also choose to keep your wisdom teeth. Mention this as a suggestion to your dentist the next time you have a visit. It is possible that you can keep them in if they aren’t causing you any pain or other discomfort at the moment. If you end up getting a cavity on one of your wisdom teeth or all of them, then your dentist will know how to proceed. You can also give us a call and set up an appointment sometime in the next few months!
