How to Tell if You Have a Cavity annapolis dental care

If you’re experiencing any cavity symptoms, make sure you pay a visit to the dentist immediately

No one wants to go to the dentist and be told they have a cavity. But, cavities happen to everyone, and it is nothing to be ashamed about. And while no one wants to hear this diagnosis, it is better not to ignore your tooth problem—or other oral health issues may develop as a result. Therefore, if you’re experiencing any cavity symptoms, make sure you pay a visit to the dentist immediately. Here are some ways to tell if you have a cavity.

What is a Cavity?

A cavity happens when tooth decay damages a tooth to the point that it creates a hole. This can affect the enamel, the outer protective coating of the tooth, or the inner layer, known as dentin.

Your Tooth Aches

A toothache is a very common symptom you may experience if you have a cavity. If your tooth starts to throb, then this could be a sign of a cavity. When a cavity develops in your tooth, it could expose the layer under the enamel, known as dentin. This layer allows for direct access to the living tissue within your teeth through many microscopic tubules. When your cavity gets this deep, the pulp can become inflamed and cause a throbbing, painful feeling.

Sensitivity to Heat and Cold

Do you feel a lingering sensitivity when you eat or drink hot or cold food or beverages? If so, this is another sign that you might have a cavity. When very hot or very cold food hits the sensitive nerves in your tooth, it stimulates nerves and cells, creating that feeling of discomfort and sensitivity. This feeling may last for seconds or even minutes after you have the food or drink. Take note of what specific food and beverages trigger this sensation so you can let your dentist know.

Discoloration

If tooth decay is left untreated, it can cause physical changes to the appearance of the tooth. If you see a dark spot on your teeth, you could have a cavity. You should especially watch for spots that increase in size. If you see discoloration on your teeth, it is best to visit your dentist as soon as you can.

Bad Breath

When you have a cavity, the bacteria that develops around it produces waste, and that waste affects your oral health. You may notice your breath smells bad, or there is a strange taste in your mouth. If you have consistently bad breath, it may be a sign of a cavity.
