Are you ready to improve your smile in the new year?

2017 is finally here! If you’ve had a rough go of it in 2016, consider making a few New Year’s resolutions to improve yourself. A healthier, happier smile can go a long way towards getting a better job and improving your overall self confidence. If you haven’t already, why not make your New Year’s resolution to promote better dental health? Here’s what you can do to keep your teeth healthier and brighter in the new year.

Eat More Good Stuff

Eating well is absolutely vital for good dental health. Not only does poor nutrition affect your entire immune system, but it also increases your vulnerability to common oral problems such as gum (periodontal disease). The antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, veggies, legumes, and nuts can help your body stave off bacteria and inflammation, as well as protect your teeth and gums. Crisp fruits and raw vegetables can also help remove plaque from your teeth and freshen your breath.

Stop Smoking Now

Tobacco increases your risk of tooth discoloration, cavities, gum recession, gum disease, throat, lung and oral cancer. And did you know that smokers are about twice as likely to lose their teeth than non smokers? You can substantially reduce your risk of tooth loss by quitting your smoking habit this year.

Stay On Top of Brushing and Flossing

The most obvious way to protect your teeth from decay and gum disease is by routinely brushing and flossing. Proper brushing will go a long way towards improve your overall oral hygiene. Make sure you are setting aside time at least twice a day. And don’t forget to floss! Flossing is necessary to remove plaque from between the teeth and below the gumline.

Schedule Your Next Checkup

Catch dental health problems before they cause discomfort and require expensive treatment. Routine visits to your dentist are critical for maintaining your oral health. If you haven’t visited your dental health professional in awhile, schedule a checkup today! Seeing your dentist at least twice a year will help you avoid costly problems and achieve a more beautiful smile in 2017.
