Brushing your teeth is a crucial step in your oral health. We all do it. But many of us run into the same common pitfalls, which can lead to cavities and even gum disease. So what are these common toothbrushing mistakes?
Common Toothbrushing Mistakes
6) Starting in the Same Spot Each and Every Time
If you are like most people, you probably brush your teeth the exact same way, starting in the exact same place, each and every time you brush. This technique, however, could be one of the biggest mistakes you could make when brushing your teeth. This is because many people “get lazy” in the same area of their mouth each time they brush.
“By the time you get to the last quadrant of your mouth, you’re bored with brushing,” says Richard H. Price, DMD, the consumer advisor for the American Dental Association.
7) Forgetting the Inner Tooth
Many people completely forget to brush the inner surface of their teeth. This means that plaque is left to fester in the mouth, leading to conditions like bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease, and more.
“The plaque you can’t see is just as important to remove as the plaque you can see,” Price says.
8) Forgetting to Rinse your Toothbrush
If you fail to rinse your toothbrush after brushing, you may actually be putting old bacteria into your mouth the next time you brush. This is because bacteria can grow on un-rinsed toothbrushes.
9) Failing to let the Toothbrush Dry
A toothbrush that is almost always moist will encourage bacteria growth. Because of this, it is recommended that you shake out any remaining moisture after rinsing your toothbrush.
10) Using the Same Toothbrush too much
It is recommended that you change your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when the bristles lose their flexibility and start to break apart. Still, many people fail to change their toothbrush enough, which could negatively affect their brushing.
