Dealing with a Dry Socket & Tooth Extractions in Annapolis, Maryland

Tooth Extraction AnnapolisA few weeks back, in our blog, “Tooth Extractions from your Annapolis Dentist,” we explained the measures to take after Tooth Extractions, including rinsing with salt water, taking pain killers, eating soft foods, avoiding smoking, etc. Still, despite your best efforts, sometimes something doesn’t go quite according to plan. Sometimes, a blood clot never forms or becomes dislodged, leaving the bone and fine nerve endings unprotected. This very painful condition, which delays the healing process, is known as a Dry Socket (alveolar osteitis) and occurs in just 2% to 5% of people following an extraction.

If pain does not lessen following an extraction or actually worsens after a few days, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Fortunately, dry sockets are easily treatable.

  1. NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, also referred to as NSAIDs, can help ease the pain caused by dry sockets.
  2. Prescription Drugs: If NSAIDs are not enough, your dentist may prescribe a stronger drug.
  3. Anesthetize the Area: Instead of drugs, your dentist may opt to anesthetize the area.
  4. Cleaning: Your dentist will clean the socket, removing any debris from the hole, and then fill the socket with a medicated dressing, which will instantly relieve your pain.
  5. Antibiotics: Your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to prevent the socket from becoming infected.
  6. Salt Water: Your dentist may recommend rinsing with salt water at home.

Risk of Dry Sockets

Some people are more at risk of dry sockets than others, including people who:

  1. Smoke
  2. Have poor oral hygiene habits
  3. Have their wisdom teeth pulled
  4. Use birth control
  5. Have greater-than-normal trauma during extraction
