Dental And Oral Surgery: How to Prepare for One of These Procedures

Depending on what is going on inside your mouth, you may require oral surgery. However, as scary as this sounds, it really isn’t as bad as you might be expecting.

At some point, your dental and oral health will need monitoring. Depending on what is going on inside your mouth, you may require oral surgery. However, as scary as this sounds, it really isn’t as bad as you might be expecting. Here at Annapolis Dental Care, we are dedicated to making sure that everything is as comfortable for you as possible when you need an operation for your mouth. Read on to learn more about how to prepare when you have one of these procedures coming up soon!

Evaluate Your Current Health Condition

Your dentist will most likely recommend that you undergo oral surgery to fix some sort of issue. In some cases, these scenarios are emergencies in which your dentist will refer you to a specialist; in others, they can assess the situation and perform simpler procedures right away there in their office. But before that can begin, you need to evaluate your current condition:

  1. Diabetes: Diabetes can hamper your body’s natural ability to heal wounds. Plus, blood sugar has an important part to play in how well your body can heal even relatively minor wounds such as the ones caused by tooth extraction.
  2. Smoking: The act of smoking cigarettes constricts blood flow, which makes it harder for even small wounds to heal – this reduces the number of healing cells that can help close wounds.
  3. Nutritional Issues: Make sure you set up a physical and get your blood work before your oral surgery – you never know what nutritional issues can cause problems for you; follow a healthy and balanced diet where you minimize your sugar intake
  4. Medication: Certain medications also have an effect on your ability to heal after dental or oral surgery.
  5. Sedation: Finally, you may have to adjust to the possibility of sedation dentistry. Sedation can calm down more anxious patients as well.

Taking Some Time Off to Recover After Oral Surgery

In today’s modern world, it can be hard to find time to unplug. When you unplug, you get a chance to recharge your batteries, but that doesn’t seem to be socially acceptable. Even so, after you have oral surgery done, you need to force yourself to slow down, relax, and take some time off so you can properly recover. See if you can schedule the surgery for a Friday and then you have the entire weekend to rest and recuperate before you need to go back to work on Monday. Here are some other questions to consider:

  • How many days off should I take off to recover?
  • How long will pain or discomfort last?
  • How long do I need to take painkillers that could affect workflow or driving faculty?
  • What should I avoid eating and drinking?
