Wisdom teeth removal can be a rite of passage.

Wisdom teeth removal can be a rite of passage. A painful one yes, but still a milestone. Although there are those lucky few who never have to face this prospect, most people need to have their wisdom teeth removed. But do they really need to be? In this blog, we will answer that question.

What’s the Big Deal About Wisdom Teeth?

Your wisdom teeth can be hard to find. They are, after all, the set of four molars deep in the back of your mouth. For most people, the arrive during the late teen years to the early twenties, although for others, their wisdom teeth never come in. Most of the time, when wisdom teeth grow in, they simply appear and cause no further problems other than some pain and discomfort. They can affect the bite or other general mouth functions, however. When this happens, they should be removed.

Why Should Wisdom Teeth be Removed?

Besides affecting the bite or other general functions of the mouth, why should wisdom teeth be removed? There are two many reasons why these teeth are removed, since they are not in and of themselves problematic.

  1. Lack of space in the mouth: It’s entirely possible that there just is not enough room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to settle in. If there is not enough space, impacting can result, which can be unbearably painful.
  2. Hygiene problems: Another primary reason these teeth are removed are because of hygienic problems. Difficult pockets can form between the teeth and the jaw, which then become breeding grounds for bacteria and plaque. Together, bacteria and plaque can either cause tooth decay and gum disease or worsen these conditions.

When Is It Time They Should Be Removed?

Certain other symptoms will present themselves if wisdom teeth need to be removed. These symptoms are:

  • Mouth infections in the back of the mouth
  • Sharp, repetitive pain in the gums
  • Any growth of tumors or cysts
  • Gum disease
  • Frequent bleeding in the back of the mouth
