What to Do When You Need Urgent Care for Dental Emergencies

So what should you do when you need urgent care for dental emergencies, often on the same day that they happen?

When you are suffering from the effects of a dental emergency, finding relief can be difficult. That’s because you want something done about it right now. As focused as our society is on instant gratification, this is hard to get when it comes to dental care or other medical attention. So what should you do when you need urgent care for dental emergencies, often on the same day that they happen? Here are some useful tips for you.

Examples of Dental Emergencies

First of all, it helps to know what counts as a dental emergency and what doesn’t. Even if you can’t state the nature of your medical emergency (due to an inability to speak clearly, for instance) at the very least, you will be able to describe it by writing it down. Of course, that is a moot point if you’re in too much pain to communicate. These are some of the most common dental emergencies that your dentist in Arnold can address for you:

  1. Sores that won’t go away
  2. Persistent pain in your teeth or gums
  3. Unusual swelling or bleeding
  4. Teeth sensitivity to both hot and cold
  5. Serious cracks or fractures in your teeth

Quick Treatments

Luckily, there are some treatments you can try to alleviate some of the pain that you are experiencing. If your jaw is fractured, damaged, or injured in some other way, and you believe it could threaten your life, then call 911 right away. Take some household pain relievers you keep in your medicine cabinet to lift some of the pain and apply ice with caution. Only use ice packs for 10-20 minutes at a time every hour. Using gel-based medications that you can get over the counter to deal with painful mouth sores is also a good idea. Try using ice or pressure to help with the pain caused by bites to your lips and your tongue. Residual bleeding from tooth extractions is normal but scary. Plug up the gaps with more gauze or use a tea bag. Chipped teeth can be filled in temporarily with some wax. Keep tooth fragments or dislodged teeth in a cup of milk or glass of water until you can see your dentist.
