The Link between Stress & your Oral Health :: Baltimore, Maryland Dentists

Believe it or not, researchers recently reviewed 14 studies published between 1990 and 2006 on the subject of stress and gum disease (periodontitis) and found a positive relationship between the two.

“More research is needed to determine the definitive relationship between stress and periodontal diseases,” says researcher Daiane Peruzzo, PhD, of the State University of Campinas. “However, patients who minimize stress may be at less risk for periodontal diseases.”

About Gum Disease

Periodontal disease, better known as gum disease, is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. It is a very serious disease currently affecting over 50 million Americans, many of whom are completely unaware there is even a problem because gum disease is generally painless. However, if left untreated, gum disease can lead to the deterioration of the bones and tissues surrounding the teeth, eventually resulting in tooth loss.

Treating Gum Disease

Your treatment options are dictated by the stage of gum disease. Options range from nonsurgical therapies that control bacterial growth to surgery to restore supportive tissues. However, as research would suggest, dealing with and preventing gum disease begins with dealing with your stress!

“Individuals with high stress levels tend to increase their bad habits, which can be harmful to periodontal health. They are less attentive to their oral hygiene and may increase their use of nicotine, alcohol, or drugs,” says Preston D. Miller Jr., DDS, president of the American Academy of Periodontology. “Patients should seek healthy ways to relieve stress through exercise, balanced eating, plenty of sleep, and maintaining a positive mental attitude.”
