Tooth Trouble: Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth

Teeth sensitivities can be caused by a number of different factors. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be helped!

Ice cream, coffee, tea, and soda can be enough to send you into fits of pain and even tears if you are like the other millions of adults who suffer from sensitive teeth. It is estimated that one in eight adults suffers from this condition. But surely it isn’t always caused by the same thing. Well, that is true. There can be a lot of different things causing your sensitivity. Let’s go over the causes and how to treat them!

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

One cause of tooth sensitivity can actually be brushing too hard. Whether you are brushing with too much force or your toothbrush’s bristles are too hard for your mouth, this can be a problem. This can actually wear down the enamel of your teeth. Switch to a softer bristle brush and be gentler on your teeth. It you eat and drink a lot of acidic food and liquids, this might lead to sensitivity. Foods like tomato sauce, lemons, grapefruits, and pickles can cause pain. At the same time, drinks like coffee, fruit juices, sodas, and even alcohol can also wear away the enamel of your teeth. Another cause could be grinding or clinching your teeth. Grinding your teeth can wear down the outer layers of your teeth, exposing the dentin and hollow tubes of your teeth to bacteria. In your effort to keep your teeth white and healthy, you could actually be damaging them. If you use whitening toothpastes or use mouthwash with alcohol in it, this could be causing your sensitivity. Other dental issues that could be causing your sensitivity are decay around the edges of fillings, cracked tooth, excessive plaque, or gum disease.

Treatments

If you are experiencing sensitivity after a routine procedure or from a dental issue, speak with your Annapolis Dental Care Dentist for help. But for other issues, there may be a simple solution. If you are grinding your teeth, speak with your dentist about purchasing a night guard. If your teeth are sensitive because of harsh whitening products, switch to a toothpaste that is designed for sensitive teeth and use a neutral fluoride mouth rinse. If these products do not work, speak with your dentist about other options that might help with your sensitivity problems.
