What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

Emergency DentistryAs an Annapolis family dentist, we know that going to the dentist can be stressful even at the best of times. When a dental emergency arises, it can be an even more uncomfortable situation to call your family dentist. However, there are some cases where you should absolutely not ignore a dental problem and contact your provider immediately. You may never have considered what exactly constitutes a dental “emergency,” though. We want you to have no doubts about when you should contact us for an emergency.

  • Injury to teeth or gums. Your teeth and gums contain nerves and blood vessels first and foremost. Not only can this cause severe pain if left untreated, but it can also cause long-term health problems. You should not hesitate to contact us for this type of dental emergency. You could also run the risk of infection that can spread to your head and neck if untreated.
  • Severe pain. Pain is almost always an indication that something is wrong. If your pain is so severe that you’re having trouble eating, sleeping, or tolerating hot or cold foods, you should contact your dentist. This may or may not be considered a dental emergency, but your Annapolis family dentist will be able to give you advice on how to deal with the pain and how soon you should be seen for it.
  • Lodged food that you can’t get out. If you can’t manage to get the food out yourself with a toothpick or dental floss, you should make the call for emergency dentistry. It can be dangerous for the food to stay lodged for too long and your dentist has special tools that can help dislodge the object without causing further injury.

Annapolis Dental Care specializes in emergency dentistry and makes time during the day to see patients in need of emergent care. If you need more than one appointment to resolve the issue, we can help with temporary pain solutions so your issue interferes minimally with your life.
