Ask Your Dentist: What Causes Morning Breath?

If you struggle with morning breath, then know that you are not alone.

If you struggle with morning breath, then know that you are not alone. For one thing, your partner probably has it too. Whether you hate that icky feeling after waking up from an afternoon power nap or you’re getting ready to face the day, following your dentist’s advice can help you feel better. Let’s look at what causes morning breath.

Common Causes

What You Eat: Your diet has a massive effect on how your breath smells. Even if you brush your teeth as vigorously as you can, you will probably still have some food debris stuck in your teeth. Garlic, onions, and spice blends will stick around for much longer than you expect. After being digested, they travel through the bloodstream into your lungs. So it could be your lungs that are affecting your morning breath problems.

Dry Mouth Problems: Make sure you’re doing everything you can to encourage saliva production. Without enough saliva, you’ll find that you suffer from dry mouth. Dry mouth can make morning breath worse.

Poor Oral Hygiene: keeping good oral hygiene habits will also help. One of the consequences of poor oral hygiene is gum disease, which can also affect your overall well-being.

Medications You Use: Lastly, think about the drugs you use every day. Taking your pills should help you feel better. But be mindful of the side effects. They could be giving you dry mouth or making your breath smell worse than it needs to because of specific chemical reactions

How to Fix It

Brush Your Teeth: the importance of brushing your teeth cannot be overstated. Ideally, you would do it after every time you eat, but this isn’t always feasible.

Rinse Your Mouth: Rinsing your mouth with some water will help. If you have the opportunity to use some mouthwash, then be sure to follow through and do it.

Chew More Gum: Sugar-free chewing gum is good for your breath and how your teeth look. For a short-term fix, it can yield dividends.

Use Some Parsley: Using fresh parsley can also make a tremendous difference. It can remove the odor of your breath and help give your mood a boost, too.
