What in the World is Gingivitis?

You might have an oral condition known as gingivitis and not even realize it.

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home. You might have an oral condition known as gingivitis and not even realize it. You might also hear your dentist refer to gingivitis as periodontal disease. Whatever it might be called, let’s learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of these conditions.

What Exactly Is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is caused by the lingering presence of tartar and plaque. The bacteria that come along with these unwanted visitors will eventually cause your gums to inflame. You might feel you that your gums are constantly sore or bleeding as a result. Although this is a type of gum disease, it’s relatively easy to deal with; you just need to improve your oral and dental health regimen and visit your dentist more often than every three years. Brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash will be your first line of defense.

When left untreated, gingivitis evolves into periodontitis, also known as periodontal disease. At this point, your teeth may start to decay and fall out, because the connective tissue securing them to your mouth has failed.

How Does It Affect You?

Healthy gums should be pink and feel firm when you touch them. If you don’t like the look of your gums because they are so often swollen and red, we understand that it is unsightly. However, it’s a sign you need treatment. You might be reluctant to brush and floss because your gums bleed whenever you do, but it’s another sign you are overdue for your next dentist appointment. You might also notice that your gums are disappearing, and no matter what you do, you have bad breath.

What Causes It?

As we noted above, plaque and tartar deposits are the main culprits. But if you don’t take care of your teeth, your gums, and your mouth, gingivitis can also start developing. During pregnancy, hormone levels in your body will be fluctuating, so although this sounds unlikely, you might also develop gingivitis. Some other factors include how old you are, your family history, and whether or not you smoke. So if you think you have gingivitis, don’t hesitate to give us a call!
