Common Toothbrushing Mistakes explained by your Annapolis Dentist

Everyone knows they should brush their teeth. However, many people do not know HOW to brush their teeth. As a result, cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems can occur. So to help you avoid these issues, we have put together a list of the most common toothbrushing mistakes.

Common Toothbrushing Mistakes

  1. Using the Wrong Toothbrush: Many people choose a toothbrush that is not compatible with their mouth. If you have to strain to open your mouth or if the toothbrush does not feel comfortable in your hand, you will be more likely you will use it improperly.
  2. Picking the Wrong Bristles: Toothbrushes come in several different bristle types, including soft, medium, and hard. So what’s the best? The ADA recommends a soft-bristled brush. Harder bristles are more likely to aggravate the gums and damage tooth enamel.
  3. Brushing Incorrectly: Yes, there is a proper way to brush. Aim your bristles at the gum line at a 45-degree angle and use short strokes, brushing up and down the teeth.
  4. Not Brushing Often Enough: You should AT LEAST be brushing twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Ideally you would brush after every meal.
  5. Not Brushing Long Enough: Brushing often enough is great, but not if you are not doing it long enough. Brushing should last at least two minutes, if not longer.
  6. Brushing to Hard: You don’t have to brush hard to get the desired results. In fact, brushing too hard can actually damage your tooth enamel, expose the root of the tooth to irritation, irritate the gums, and more.
  7. Starting in the Same Place Every Time: If you start in the same place every time, you will more than likely make the same mistakes every time. So instead, change your brushing pattern.
  8. Skipping the Inner Tooth Surface: Don’t forget to brush your inner tooth surface.
  9. Forgetting to Rinse: Rinsing your toothbrush after you brush is important. It helps remove bacteria and any other food debris.
  10. Forgetting to change the Toothbrush: You should switch your toothbrush every 3-4 months, according to the American Dental Association.
