Don’t let Bad Breath ruin your Day: Oral Care Tip from an Annapolis Dentist

Are you one of the 40 million Americans who suffer from frequent bad breath, better known as halitosis? Frequent bad breath is a person’s worst nightmare, especially when in a public setting.  Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to fight back against bad breath.

Oral Care Tips to Beat Bad Breath

  1. Avoid certain Foods and Drinks: Aside from the obvious, like garlic and onions, there are other foods out that that are less than kind to your breath. Coffee is another one. And if you find any other food or drinks that give you problems, try to avoid them in the future.
  2. Brushing and Flossing Frequently: It is recommended that you brush at least twice a day and floss at least once. However, if you are plagued by bad breath, it is okay to brush and floss more frequently, especially after meals. But be careful, brushing too frequently or too vigorously can erode tooth enamel.
  3. Brush your Tongue while you’re at it: The coating that forms on your tongue can be causing your bad breath. So next time you are brushing your teeth, take a few seconds and scrape your tongue, as well.
  4. Use Mouthwash: Mouthwash does more than just freshening your breath; it also attacks the bacteria that cause bad breath.
  5. Chew Gum: Chewing gum stimulates saliva, the mouth’s natural defense against plaque and other bad breath causing elements.
  6. Quit Smoking: Besides being bad for your health, smoking is also not very kind to your breath.
  7. Visit the Dentists Regularly: During these visits your teeth will be cleaned and polished and plaque and tartar will be removed from your gums. While this is happening, your dentist or dental hygienist will be checking your teeth and gums for any signs of more serious problems.
