The Process of Getting Dentures

Get the smile you’d always wanted with dentures!

As we get older, plaque and bacteria can eat away at our teeth and gums. Unfortunately, this damage cannot be reversed, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a solution for your dental problems: dentures. These false teeth can give you a bigger, brighter smile than your natural teeth and last longer because they aren’t capable of decay. Whether you need a full set or a partial, these teeth may be just what you need!

Types of Dentures

There are two types of dentures that you and your dentist can choose from: a full set or a partial set. The full set of dentures will require your dentist to pull all of your teeth in order to fit them perfectly in your mouth. But a partial set will allow you to keep your healthier teeth and only replace the teeth that are not healthy. A partial set will hook around your healthy teeth.

Being Fitted for Dentures

The first step to your new smile is for your dentist to form a mold of your current teeth and gums to make sure dentures are a possibility for you. Once the mold is taken, the next step is to remove your decayed or weakened teeth. This step will allow your gums to heal from any infection that could be in them. It is important to follow all of the directions given to you by your dentist after the extraction so that you remain pain-free and comfortable. After your mouth has had a chance to heal, it is time for the fitting. Your dentist will have you try on different sets of dentures and shave down parts to ensure they feel comfortable in your mouth. It will take some adjustment for you to get used to your new smile. If taken care of properly, a good set of dentures can last you up to 10 years.
