SIGNS YOU MAY BE BRUSHING TOO HARD

overbrushing

Brushing too vigorously can lead to dental complications.

When it comes to healthy brushing, you might be surprised to learn that there can be too much of a good thing. Brushing too hard or too vigorously can harm your enamel or gums and become a problem. Most people that overbrush have no idea that they’re doing it, and are simply trying to have good dental practices.

Signs of Overbrushing

A dentist will be able to immediately notify if he/she detects signs of overbrushing during your next dental visit. Signs that you are brushing too hard may include receding gums, enamel wear, or cavities located on the roots of the teeth. Minimizing the risk of these problems is relatively simple. Even if you don’t suspect that you’re overbrushing, here are a few things you can do to make sure your mouth stays healthy and fresh.

Toothbrush Maintenance

Your toothbrush needs to be replaced every three months or if it shows any signs of wear. Frayed bristles are a solid indication that it’s time. You don’t want to be scraping your teeth with the jagged ends of your toothbrush. Also keep in mind that if your toothbrush is wearing out too quickly, it may be a sign that you’re brushing too hard.

Brush Gently

Remember, plaque is soft. You don’t need to scrub your mouth like you would to clean your bathtub. The most important thing is to thoroughly reach all the areas of your mouth. Don’t forcefully push the bristles against your teeth until they bend or use a saw-like motion. Instead, use small circular strokes to cover each and every tooth.

Use the Right Brush

Typically it’s a good idea to avoid medium or hard bristle toothbrushes. Soft and even extra soft brushes will do the job of cleaning your teeth just as effectively, and they are less likely to damage your enamel. This is especially important if you have a tooth sensitivity. Also, don’t forget to floss every day to reach areas that your brush cannot. If you’re worried about your brushing technique, consult your dentist for the best ways to keep teeth and gums healthy.
