Tooth Decay Prevention Tips from your Annapolis Dentist

What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth structure, the protective enamel, and the dentin layer of the tooth.

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is caused when foods containing carbohydrates – such as breads, cereals, fruits, and soda – are left on the teeth for a period of time. Then bacteria in your mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids, which combine with saliva, food debris, and bacteria to form plaque. The acids found in this plaque slowly dissolve tooth enamel, creating cavities.

Tooth Decay Prevention

Preventing tooth decay is a daily struggle, but it is one that you can win. You just have to know how. Luckily, we at Annapolis Dental Care are here to help. Below you will find several oral care tips to help you fight tooth decay and keep your smile bright.

Tooth Decay Prevention Tips

  1. Good Oral Hygiene: Tooth decay prevention starts at home. You should brush your teeth AT LEAST twice a day. Preferably, you would brush after every meal and before bed. You should also floss at least once a day.
  2. Watch what you eat: Watch what you eat and try limiting snacks, especially candies, pretzels, and chips.
  3. Chew Gum: Chewing gum increases saliva flow and helps wash excess food debris from your mouth, cutting down on plaque.
  4. Dental Sealants: A thin protective sealant to your permanent molars will help prevent decay in the pits and fissures.
  5. Regular Visits to the Dentist: The best way to avoid tooth decay is to schedule routine cleanings that will keep your teeth and gums healthy. We recommend everyone come in for a routine cleaning every six months.
