Gum Disease: Treating Gingivitis at Home

Regular flossing is essential for preventing and treating gingivitis.

Here’s the bottom line: preventing and treating gingivitis is all about getting rid of as much plaque as you can. If you don’t already know, plaque is that sticky film filled with bacteria that can build up around your teeth or gums and can eventually cause gingivitis. Toxins produced by plaque can cause gum disease wherein there is redness, swelling, and even bleeding. If you take care of gum disease early enough, you can fight back against that plaque pretty easily, so keep these gingivitis prevention tips in mind.

Use the Right Toothpaste

Antibacterial toothpaste helps you keep plaque at bay all day and all night. Completing your oral hygiene routine with the use of antibacterial toothpaste, or even specifically antigingivitis toothpaste, can help you deal with all of that plaque. This is a clinically proven method of achieving healthier gums and treating gingivitis signs and gum disease quickly and efficiently.

Brush Properly

Be sure you brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice daily. You may want to consider using an electric toothbrush, which allows for a more thorough brushing than your typical manual brush. Take a look at your gum line, too: healthy mouths include healthy gums. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle and use short, circular strokes to get enough contact. Don’t use too much pressure either, or you can hurt your gums!

Try Mouthwash

Antibacterial mouthwash is also available, which can get that plaque that you can’t reach with a toothbrush, helping prevent gum disease from ever becoming an issue for you. Look for a reputable mouthwash that can help reduce early signs of gingivitis.

Flossing Tips

Flossing daily can get rid of those food particles in between your teeth that you just can’t get to with a brush. Take about 18 inches of floss, wind it around your middle finger of one hand, and wind a small piece between your middle finger on the other hand. As you floss, unwind fresh floss, moving from tooth to tooth.
