What to Do About a Sensitive Tooth

What to Do About a Sensitive Tooth

So if you’ve got a sensitive tooth, here’s what you can do about it.

Do you have sensitive teeth? Then you know how annoying and painful they can be. For one thing, they make it hard to enjoy chilled drinks and cold treats like ice cream. But a sensitive tooth is touchy about the temperature in general, not just cold.  So if you’ve got a sensitive tooth, here’s what you can do about it.

Take Better Care

The first piece of advice we can offer you is to take better care of your teeth! Avoid brushing too forcefully, and don’t eat or drink anything that is acidic. Cheese, milk, and yogurt are good for your teeth. Also, practice unclenching your teeth, as that could contribute to the problem as well. Finally, stop bleaching your teeth for a little while.

Figure Out the Root Cause

The next step is to figure out the root cause of the problem. For instance, it’s possible that your gums are shrinking. This problem becomes even more apparent if you are over the age of 40. Gum disease caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar could be another cause. Maybe you have a cracked tooth and just don’t know it, or your filling broke. As durable as fillings (and natural teeth are) they can break down due to what you eat and drink and what your oral care routine looks like on a daily basis.

Ideas for Treatment

After figuring out what the problem is, you should speak to your dentist. The team here at Annapolis Dental Care is more than happy to help! You can try toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth, fluoride gel, fillings for exposed roots, sealants, desensitization gel, and of course, night guards or dental guards, both of which help if you tend to grind your teeth either of frustration or unconscious habit. Depending on the condition of your teeth, your dentist could recommend that you get a root canal. Either way, continue to brush and floss as you normally would, and schedule checkups twice a year.
