The minty liquid that gets in between the empty spaces has many benefits.

Benefits of mouthwash! The minty liquid that gets in between the empty spaces, consider this one of the main benefits of mouthwash. Along with brushing and flossing, mouthwash is another key weapon in the war for better dental and oral health. Mouthwash is inexpensive and easy to get into the habit of using.

Types of Mouthwash: Benefits, but how?

Mouthwash As we’ve discussed before, there are several different types of mouthwash. These include the following:

Each of these types of mouthwash serves a different purpose. Antiseptic mouthwashes kill germs. Fluoride mouthwashes repair enamel and strengthen your teeth. Cosmetic mouthwashes however, are only superficial. Why is that? They provide temporary relief from bad breath (halitosis) the same way mints or gum might. They all provide benefits, but how?

The Benefits of Mouthwash

Be on your guard: cavities and gum disease are your mouth’s worst enemy. If your mouth is under attack by infections, they can easily spread to the rest of your body. Depending on how healthy your mouth is, you may need different levels of support from the three types mentioned above.

  1. Mouthwash reduces gingivitis and plaque: gingivitis is the beginning of gum disease, while plaque (also known as tartar) can contribute to tooth decay. Both are unsightly and painful to experience but mouthwash can help fend them off.
  2. No prescriptions needed: Mouthwash is a common grocery item that you can pick up in almost any size bottle. There are no prescriptions from your doctor or your dentist needed, although it is recommended you seek advice from your dentist on the best type of mouthwash for you.
  3. Easy for kids to use: The regular adult mouthwash (“Listerine”) may be too intense for kids, but there are plenty of children’s mouthwashes, usually marketed with popular cartoon characters, and often flavored less harshly, with grape or bubblegum. Please do note that children under six are advised not to use mouthwash; it could hurt their developing teeth!

Remember, in order to maximize the effectiveness of mouthwash, always brush your teeth twice a day. Allow  2-3 minutes for the fluoride to work its magic on your teeth. While unpleasant, flossing also helps, especially to remove any food debris that gets stuck in stubborn areas. For instance, in your back teeth where it’s harder for the brush to reach. When brushing and flossing alone won’t work, mouthwash is there to save the day.
