What You Need to Know About Perio Breath

You may recognize gum disease and halitosis, but you might not know what perio breath is.

You may recognize gum disease and halitosis, but you might not know what perio breath is. It goes beyond simple bad breath brought about by food or drink. It is a problem with gum health that has advanced and is too complicated to be resolved with one treatment. Let’s learn more about it!

How to Know You Have Gum Disease

What are some signs of perio breath and gum disease? They can be easy to spot if you know what you are looking for in regard to this condition. If your gums are constantly bleeding, feeling swollen, or are tender, then that is one symptom. Other symptoms include sensitive teeth, receding gums, unusual pain while chewing, and of course, bad breath. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease and if caught in time, then this condition can be reversed. However, most of the time gingivitis isn’t detected before it develops into periodontitis, which is the root of perio breath. Periodontitis is where the gums themselves are starting to break down, and unfortunately, at this point, the damage is irreversible and can only be treated but not cured.

Periodontitis and Bad Breath

So now let’s take a closer look at periodontitis and its connections to perio breath. There are thousands of bacteria in your mouth and in your gut. Some are good, and most are bad. It’s the bad bacteria that release volatile sulfur compounds that produce the bad smell associated with sour breath. Gum disease and other infections make this smell worse. Gingivitis and periodontitis are also connected to layers of bacteria that form on your tongue
